495 Express Lanes

A predictable option on the Capital Beltway. The 495 Express Lanes are high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes that operate on the Virginia side of the I-495/Capital Beltway. HOT lanes are tolled lanes that operate alongside existing highway lanes to provide users with a faster and more predictable travel option. Buses, carpools (HOV-3), motorcycles and emergency vehicles have free access to the 495 Express Lanes. Drivers with fewer than three occupants can pay to access the Lanes.

Location of the Express Lanes:
  • Two southbound lanes down the center of the Beltway after the George Washington Parkway/Georgetown Pike exit to north of the Springfield Interchange (approximately 14 miles).
  • Two northbound lanes down the center of the Beltway from north of the Springfield Interchange to just south of the George Washington Parkway/ Georgetown Pike exit (approximately 14 miles).

Toll Rates: Tolls for the Express Lanes are dynamic, meaning they change periodically based on real-time traffic conditions to keep the lanes free flowing. Dynamic message signs prior to entry display toll prices for up to 3 destinations to provide you information on the toll price.

Roadway Rules:
  • All users, except motorcycles, need an E-ZPass or E-ZPass Flex. No option to pay with cash.
  • Remember to travel with only one E-ZPass in your vehicle at a time.
  • 2-axle vehicles and buses only.
  • E-ZPass must be properly mounted on the windshield per E-ZPass Mounting Instructions and Customer Agreement. Violations resulting from E-ZPass Tags that are not mounted are subject to Administration Fees.
  • 2-axle vehicles and buses only.
  • HOV-3+, transit vehicles, motorcycles and emergency vehicles may use the Lanes without paying a toll by nominating their HOV status through an E-ZPass Flex or E-ZPass registered with 495 Express Lanes.
  • For toll-free travel, make sure you set your E-ZPass Flex to HOV mode before you get on the road.
  • Express Lanes rules are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • You cannot tow boats or trailers on the Express Lanes.
  • Those traveling without an E-ZPass tag may be subject to administration fees, debt collection and/or court.
  • Those claiming HOV-3 with fewer than 3 occupants may be subject to enforcement by the Virginia State Police and court.
